Calcutta Rescue is an organization founded and run by an energetic 75 year old friend.
Dr. Jack Preger has been helping the people of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) on several fronts: education and provision of a daily meal for street children, medical clinics, training for craftswomen...
I met Dr. Preger last fall in Kolkata and saw firsthand the incredible difference his organization is making. He works in primitive conditions with the bare minimum. I was very impressed when I saw his own humble quarters: 2 rooms and a very basic kitchen and bathroom with cold water. He and his volunteers receive no money from the organization. The only money Dr. Preger himself receives is from a small British pension.
Dr. Preger is a sincere, humourous, hard-working, dedicated doctor who has always been in the service of the poor. Originally from England, he first worked in Bangladesh where his visa renewal was refused after he exposed corruption of leaders. His work in Kolkata has never been easy.
He once had to work from the sidewalk, dispensing medication. He was arrested at least once, and jailed, accused of proselytising which is not at all his kind of thing!
When I was planning a trip to India, good friends of mine in Spain who had known Dr. Preger as a young medical student, suggested I try to meet him in Kolkata. I started a correspondence with him and was so taken by his witty, upbeat e-mails that I just had to meet him! I have nothing but admiration for him. I hope to continue helping him through my story writing.
You can help by purchasing a limited edition, signed copy of my book of short stories The Fishermen of Progreso. I also sell my books in front of Tara whenever possible on Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am until 3 pm. If you like my stories, please tell your friends. By the way, they are not related to Calcutta Rescue, since I had no knowledge of it when I wrote them. In fact, some of them are rather irreverent!
The Campus Bookstore at Queen’s University and Novel Idea on Princess Street also carry copies. And you can purchase copies through my website. (Special price for reading groups).
